WilsonSanta Paula TimesA proposal to name the baseball field at Santa Paula High School after baseball star and 1963 SPHS graduate Jim Colborn will come back to district trustees June 13.Over 400 people had signed petitions supporting the idea. The board split 2-2 Wednesday on changing district policy, which allows facilities to only be named for persons who had been deceased for a minimum of one year. Trustees Bob Salas and Terry Nelson voted for the change and Catherine Sepulveda and Christina Urias voted no. Board member Doug Jackson was absent, so when the matter returns, he’ll have the deciding vote.Steve Brown presented the petitions to the board last month and a number of people spoke on behalf of changing the policy at that time. At this week’s meeting Brown thanked the board for considering the change.
In discussing the issue Nelson noted that school facilities had been named for living persons in the past, including Jones Field. “We need more flexibility in our policy,” he added. Sepulveda said she had given the issue a lot of consideration but couldn’t vote to change the policy. Urias said she “Didn’t want to be too hasty to change policy.”The original idea to name the field for Colborn came from City Councilman Ray Luna. He had suggested honoring Colborn as early as 2006.Colborn was an outstanding athlete and scholar. He was Student Body president, captain of the baseball, football and basketball teams his senior year. He went on to play college ball, and spent a decade as a major league pitcher before working as a pitching coach for the L.A. Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates.
