By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesAlthough there won’t be a 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular, the First Weekend in July will still be a crackling with fun events ranging from the city’s Cruise Nite on Friday and the First Sunday of the Month Open House at Santa Paula Airport.Cruise Nite fills East Main Street with sweet rides and those who love them every Friday during the display season running from April to October. Hundreds of classic pre-1975 vehicles, from hot rods and Model A’s to muscle cars and Cobras, are displayed from 10th to 7th streets - closed for the exhibited autos - as well as crammed into every side street nook and cranny possible. The July 3 Cruise Nite, like others, will offer live musical entertainment, the opportunity to purchase a “different every month” Cruise Nite T-shirt featuring a displayed car, and the chance to visit Santa Paula’s historic downtown and its eateries and shops. Cruise Nite starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends when it gets dark.An added Friday evening attraction is the Blanchard Community Library sale of books specially selected to appeal to Cruise Nite attendees. With a heavy emphasis on automotive tomes, ranging from books of photos and even repair manuals, the Book Sale is held at Blanchard Community Library, 119 N. 8th St., right around the corner from Cruise Nite action.Come on down, see old friends and make new ones at Cruise Nite, the coolest and largest regular gathering of cars - and those who love them! - in Ventura County.
July 5 will be the First Sunday of the Month and that means open house at the Santa Paula Airport, where the Chain of Hangars Museum is ready to welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. At the museum aviation history comes alive, and other hangar owners are more than happy to share their wonderful vintage and classic aircraft through special displays.Hangar Number One tells the rich history of Santa Paula Airport - which opened in 1930 - through vintage film, newspaper clippings and photographs and memorabilia. Each of the privately owned hangars that make up the museum offer fascinating collections ranging from motorcycles to miniature race cars, antique radios to aviation memorabilia. A tram helps visitors save steps as they tour the Aviation Museum of Santa Paula’s hangars. And while at First Sunday, don’t forget to visit CP Aviation, home of the Museum Gift Shop, where everything aviation is on sale. First Sunday often features car club displays, and the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 723 offers free airplane rides to kids ages 7-17.Although Santa Paula won’t be offering its annual Fireworks Spectacular, there are several such events throughout Ventura County. Don’t feel like going out? Several television broadcasts accompanied by patriotic music will be aired Saturday evening. And remember: possession and/or use of any and all fireworks in Santa Paula - even those considered safe and sane - is strictly against the law. The Santa Paula Police and Fire joint undercover taskforce has been launched to catch those setting off or in possession of fireworks, and fines for breaking the law can be sky high.
