If you’re looking for a sweet Valentine art treat be sure to attend the February 14 Santa Paula Society of the Arts Demonstration Artist meeting, where one of the area’s most acclaimed artists will share her technique for creating unique art that mixes fun with simplicity.

The public is welcome to attend Sunday’s meeting featuring Dolas Tubbs at the historic Depot, located at the corner of 10th and Santa Barbara streets. The free demonstration meeting will be held at the SPSA Depot Gallery from 2 to 4 p.m.

The timing of the meeting, according to SPSA’s Virginia Gunderson, is also sweet, as “It will give our members and community guests time to get to the grand opening of the Santa Paula Art Museum” less than a block away. The multi-gallery new museum, dedicated to the famous Santa Paula Art Collection and also a showcase for other featured exhibits, is located at the historic Limoneira Building, 117 N. 10th Street.

Tubbs’ passion for art is expressed emotionally by doing semi-abstract work in fascinating collage and mixed media. A resident of Santa Paula, Tubbs’ extensive travels have aided in her abilities to express herself, as well as helping her to discover a wide-range of subject matter.

Her love of watercolor takes her outdoors, where she has continued to study by occasionally taking plein air classes and meeting with her wide circle of other art friends. Tubbs has studied various printmaking techniques, and she “loves” to experiment with many types of artwork, all of which she is known to excel at. She works mostly from a humble studio behind her home, where her prize-winning and highly collectible works are created.

For the February 14 SPSA demonstration meeting Tubbs will show how to make prints from a foam plate using water-based inks and printing without a printing press. This creation of unique art, said Tubbs, can be done at home and “is simple, really fun and almost problem free.”
