Lady Cardinals come away with big league opening wins over visiting Malibu teams

Both the Lady Cardinal JV and varsity basketball teams finished with wins over Malibu Tuesday night. This was the first Frontier League contest for Santa Paula. The varsity won their game, 32-19 and the JV took an astounding 42-5 victory.

The Lady Cardinal varsity survived a poor shooting night, to bring home the victory. The girls played a well-rounded defensive effort the entire game. They are now 5-9 overall record, 1-0 in Frontier League play

Top Santa Paula scorers: Miranda Magana, 9 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal; Yesenia Mancilla, 6 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks; Elissa Rico, 4 points, 10 rebounds; Danya Zizumbo 4 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals; Lizzette Ramirez, 4 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals.

The Lady Cardinal JV started league play off with a win at home.

Kiana Arellano led the Cards with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals; Vanessa Chavez had 9 points, including a 3 pointer, 3 assists and 5 steals; Kayla Stockton had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block.  Other top scorers for the Cardinals were Sonia Mendez with 4 points and 1 steal; Lauren Lazos 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal; Andrea Fernandez dropped a 3 pointer and had 1 rebound, 1 assist and 2 steals; Sierra Blair had 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal; Dominique Fontes had 2 points 1 rebound and 1 block; Samantha Rodriguez had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal.

The JV girls improved their record to 12-2 overall and 1-0 in league.
