La Cabana serves up Billy Docs, while Hawks escape Pirates’ plank
Sports

In the JCBL second round of playoff games, La Cabana eased by the Billy Docs 9-4, and El Rio Hawks narrowly defeated McCarthy Pirates 4-3.

Either game was worthy of a championship game. However, in the first game of the day, La Cabana led by Ricky Lipman’s 3 for 4 hitting,  a single, double and home run, plus La Cabana received eight free passes from the Doc’s pitching. It was too much for the Billy Doc to overcome. Josh Grajeda had another strong pitching performance for La Cabana as he hurled 6 shutout innings._David Van Summer with a 3 for 4 hitting day and Ruben Gomez’s home run and single were not enough to offset the runs of La Cabana. Walks were the difference as La Cabana throwers issued NO bases on balls. Overall, a very good season for the Billy Docs.

In the second game of the day, the Pirates and Hawks battled in a true classic baseball game, and the Hawks prevailed 4-3 with 1 run in the 7th and 1 run in the 8th to pull the game out of the hat.

The Hawks were led by Frank Tinoco’s 3 singles and David Fraiser’s 2 doubles. Jake Regalado, the Hawks pitching ace, again pitched a gutsy game with 7 innings and only 2 runs of which 1 was earned. This game put the Hawks in the Championship game.

The Pirates just couldn’t get the bats going and were led by Gutierrez’s 2 singles. Nathan Roth pitched 5 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. It was a shame that either team had to lose on this day as both played truly exceptionally good baseball.
