Free “Building a Nation of Readers” book marks - BCL’s theme for the event and created by library staff - will be given to the children, a small gift that means much when placed inside a beloved book.
This is the first year the library has designed a specific program around National Children’s Book Week, which was founded in 1919 by the Children’s Book Council.A nonprofit trade association, the Children’s Book Council promotes literacy and encourages the reading and enjoying of children’s books. The council was created because children’s book publishers recognized the importance of supporting National Children’s Book Week, said Gavenman.“National Children’s Book Week not only highlights reading and books but focuses attention on how essential reading is to the lives of children, intellectually and emotionally,” said Gavenman. To have an informed adult citizenry relies on “believing in and fostering the importance of books and reading for our children.”Blanchard Community Library is located at 119 N. 8th St. For more information on the National Children’s Book Week celebration or other library programs for children, call BCL at 525-3615
