Glen City third-grade students in Marsha De La O, Carolyn Dougherty, and Rebecca Soriano’s classes are leading the school in pages read for the 3rd annual Governor’s Reading Award Program. De La O’s class leads with 89,000 plus pages, followed by Dougherty’s with 77,000, and Soriano’s class with 76,000. The classes are striving to read more than 1 million pages by April 1. Last year, nearly 600,000 California students in grades K-8 participated in the program. The six-month competition begins October 1, and concludes April 1, 2002. The 800 schools that read the most pages will receive a $5,000 award for their school. As a reward, the three classes were served ice cream and sherbet cones with all the toppings by assistant principal, Marisela Favila, and reading specialist, Katie Miller.
