Blanchard Community Library celebrates Teen Read Week

Santa Paula News
Blanchard Community Library celebrated Teen Read Week 1999 by inviting teens 6th grade and up to treat themselves to an hour of reading for fun. The 110 young people who participated Thursday afternoon then received another treat - a coupon for a Baskin Robbins ice cream cone! The event was co-sponsored by Altrusa International of Ventura and Baskin Robbins Santa Paula, along with the Library. This was a wonderful example of public and private sectors of the community joining together in an effort to encourage and promote reading.Seven volunteers from Altrusa manned the check-in stations and surprise visitors included Brenda DeJamaer, Library Services Supervisor for the Santa Paula Elementary School District, and Annette Halpern, Reading Specialist at Santa Paula High School. Both women helped publicize the event ahead of time and then chose to come and read along with the students. In addition to participating in this annual national event, Blanchard Community Library encourages teens to connect with the Library by offering the Teen Scene Program. Santa Paula youth ages 12-17 are welcome to join us. For more information and upcoming events, please contact the Library at 525-3615.
