Hot dogs will be served by the Kiwanis. This Kids Day Kickoff at the Boys & Girls Club will be a great beginning for Kids Day.There are many different special days that we celebrate such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Grandparents Day and even Secretary’s Day but there is a new day coming soon for kids.It has been said that, “every day is kids day,”. However parents find it very difficult to spend meaningful quality time with their children. The Families and Work Institute’s study, “Ask the Children”, found that while children are happy with the amount of time their parents spend with them, they wish the time together was not rushed, but focused and rich in shared activities. Research shows that when adults spend meaningful time with kids, it helps them develop a positive self-image and a sense of belonging, usefulness and purpose. That is why the first Sunday of August has been set aside to celebrate Kids Day to celebrate and honor America’s children. The first inaugural Kids Day was Sunday, August 5, 2001 and this year it is Sunday, August 3, 2003. There is even a Kids Day pledge. It is as follows; We pledge to spend meaningful time together, to talk, to listen, to learn and to play, to share a moment, create a memory and make a Kid’s Day!Using the acronym F.A.M.I.L.Y., you can start planning your own Kid’s Day.
F - Focus on the children, turn out and turn off distractions, phone, computers and television.A - Ask the children what meaningful time means to them and let the kids participate in the planning for the day and carrying out the plans.M- Make it fun, remember what it was like to be a kid and just have fun! Do something you haven’t done in a long time.I - Interact with the kids, don’t just watch them. Join in playing their games and laugh along with them. This is not a competition.L- Listen to what your children have to say and encourage them to share their thoughts, dreams and wishes. Let them know how important their thoughts really are. Y - Young at heart; know how great it is to be young at heart again. Even if you are a grown-up you know that you still want to have fun like a kid sometimes. Pick activities that both you and your children can enjoy together. For more information on Kids Day at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley call 525-7910.
