By Brian D. Wilson Santa Paula TimesSanta Paula Union High School District trustee Eric Barragan, in a surprise move, resigned as a member of the board last weekend. His resignation came after the board interviewed four candidates to fill the position left vacant by the earlier resignation of Shirley Hendren. Hendren said she had to leave in order to take care of her elderly mother. Barragan, 29, is relocating to Long Beach. After two hours of interviewing prospective board members and another hour of deliberations, the board decided to name former trustee Terry Nelson to finish Hendren’s term, which runs out in November. After Barragan resigned the board indicated that Catherine Sepulveda was their choice to fill his term.Nelson’s appointment becomes final at the regular board meeting set for Wednesday at the City Hall Council Chambers. Sepulveda can’t be seated until Barragans’ resignation is approved by the Ventura County Board of Education, although district officials expect that could happen at Wednesday’s meeting as well.
Nelson served eight years on the board and before that, his mother had been on the board for 20 years. Nelson told trustees that he had no political agenda. “I just care about the kids,” he said. “I felt I could help with finishing her (Hendren’s) term because of my experience.”Sepulveda had spent four years as an Outreach Mentor at Santa Paula High School. She told the board that she felt it was time to step up to the plate. “It’s time to help the school,” she added. “I bring insight and knowledge. I want to see Santa Paula High be the excellent school I know it can be.”The board also heard from two other candidates for the positions. Dr. Roger Ferris, who has 29 years experience in education and Yolanda Cerda-Lee a community member and full-time college student were also interviewed.
