We will be utilizing a much more aggressive attacking scheme this year. We have good team speed and we plan to use that to our advantage. Defensive Line - Max Montoya (11), Justen Ibarra (12), and Saul Reyes (11) will most likely be the starters. Michael Garcia (12), Rene Vitela (12), and Tony Flores (11) are battling for playing time. Linebackers - Kevin Moore (12), Robert Garcia (12), Alejandro Patron (12), Jon Duran (12), and Blake Cowan (11) provide us with the fastest corps of linebackers we have ever had. These guys can flat out run to the ball. Moore & Cowan were all league selections in 2003. Moore was also named to the all county team. Defensive Backs - Spencer Fox (11) returns after earning all league and all county honors in 2003. He will be joined by fellow juniors Robert Perez, Victor Rodriguez, Carlos Acosta, and Jose Ramos. This group is young, but very athletic and intelligent. Seniors Kevin Castaneda & Oscar Rodriguez add depth to this group.

Santa Paula Cardinal varsity football team gets ready for another season

Some thoughts on the 2004-2005 Cardinal football varsity team from Head Coach Ed Gomez:
Sports
Offense
Quarterback - Anthony Bavero (12) and Travis McClain (12) have emerged as the top 2 quarterbacks at the conclusion of the summer. Bavero has the strongest arm of any quarterback we have coached during our years at SPHS. He lacks experience, but has demonstrated good leadership ability. Travis McClain is a left hander with good speed, but he also lacks Varsity experience. Running Backs - This is the strength of the offense. Jon Duran (12) is the top returner. He averaged over 5 yards a carry in 2003. He is extremely quick and strong. Robert Perez (11) has excellent vision and cut back ability. Josh Vaskovich (12) and Blake Cowan (11) will also get some carries. Kevin Moore (12) returns as the starting full back. He is a great blocker and a tough runner. Receivers - Spencer Fox (11), Victor Rodriguez (11), Carlos Acosta (11), Jose Ramos (11), and Alex Patron (12) form a young but talented corps of receivers. Fox is the fastest of the bunch, but they are all capable of big plays. Tight End - Robert Garcia (11) saw time at this spot last year, Elisha Kennedy is progressing well in his switch from wide receiver. Offensive Line - Mark Quintanilla (12) will anchor the center spot. Randy Aguilera (12) and Alfonso Flores (12) will play the guard spots, and Michael Garcia (12), Chris Monen (11), Max Montoya (11) and Ralph Torres will play the tackle positions. The group is inexperienced, but they have a good chemistry amongst themselves and they communicate well.Defense
