The Santa Paula Unified School District Board has been given another look at the conceptual plans for a new school in the East Area 1 development.
Scott Gaudinear of Flewelling & Moody Architects reported on the latest developments in the design process for the possible K-8 school. He said the process would continue with a more complete design, followed by actual construction documents. The board will have to approve the design before that third step can move ahead.
Gaudinear told the board that one challenge for the 11-acre site is road access. There will be one road that passes in front of the school. He said a drop off two-lane driveway is suggested to run through the parking lot. He noted that a Community Building is also being proposed adjacent to the school athletic fields.
Board President Michelle Kolbeck expressed concern about the size of the site. She said that it was first planned as a K-5 school, which the 11-acre site could easily handle. Now, with a planned K-8 school the property is maxed out.
Board Member Chris Wilson suggested talking to Blanchard Library about sharing the school library facility. The Core Building would house the library and a teacher’s lounge as well as administration offices and a large multi-purpose room with a stage. A full kitchen would be in back of the multi-purpose room.
The kindergarten building would have four classrooms, about 1200 square feet each. The regular classrooms would take up four buildings. Each classroom would be 950 square feet, with a total of eight classrooms. Several board members suggested that there be the capability to have windows that open in all of the facilities.
There will be a building in the center of the campus with flex labs and music classrooms. A complete gymnasium with bleachers and office space is also in the plans.
