A Santa Paulan is facing five charges that could result multiple sentences of life in prison without parole including for the murder of a longtime — and well-known — Santa Paulan.

According to Santa Paula Police Sgt. Cody Madison the preliminary hearing for David Hernandez of Santa Paula, was held April 19 and April 20.

Hernandez, 42, is accused of murdering Hector Alamillo, 33, of Santa Paula on July 23, 2014.

Alamillo, whose popular family has deep roots in Santa Paula, was found suffering from a gunshot wound inside a home on the 400 block of Grant Line Street, where he was pronounced dead.

Hernandez, a known documented gang member who had an active felony warrant for violation of his parole at the time, was quickly identified as the suspect and was captured a week later at a Ventura motel.

Hernandez initially refused to exit his motel room but after a brief standoff he was arrested.

Madison said at the conclusion of the preliminary hearing Hernandez was held to answer to “one count of murder, one count of sexual assault, and three counts of kidnapping. Each count carries a minimum sentence of life without the possibility of parole.”

If found guilty of all charges Madison said, “The minimum sentence would be five life sentences without the possibility of parole.”

He added that the jury trial is not expected to “start for at least one year,” and the SPPD  “Would like to thank the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for their support and assistance,” in the case.
