He was born February 3, 1932 in San Francisco. He served in the Navy during the Korean War for six years. He worked as a mechanical engineer in aerospace for several years, and also worked in childcare services and publishing. He later took various odd jobs to put a potato on the table while he did what he really wanted to do.Everyone who knew him would remark on what a warm, kind and considerate human being he was (and still is I’m sure). Many a time he’d have a tear in his eye over something he deeply felt. And his sense of humor never took a back seat either. He passionately read and loved to discuss the Founding Fathers of America and the whole saga of forming the Constitution. He especially admired Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin and Abraham Lincoln, who he sometimes identified with because Lincoln was not always comfortable in his tall body either. Politically he was an independent. His greatest joys in life were good conversation, Cuban music, hot food, the color yellow, French Citroen cars (he had five during his lifetime), and tinkering with anything that didn’t work – Rube Goldberg style, and essentially just doing anything creative.
Although he only resided in Santa Paula for a short time, he appreciated its genuine warmth and accessibility. He wanted his remains to be cremated and his ashes will be scattered off the coast of Ventura in December. His wife Nina, while painfully missing him, is extremely grateful for their rich, adventurous and rewarding 49 years together.Maria Betancourt MendozaMaria Betancourt Mendoza, 93, passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2004 in Santa Paula.Maria was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, and had been a resident of Santa Paula for 78 years.
